Introduction: It is expected and compulsory that all NCE students that studies English language as a course should learning basic grammar as a course so as to help them in identifying the word classes that we have in English language and to make use of them effectively which will help the students to master other courses very well.

 

 Course Objectives: The place of grammar in the teaching and learning of English is central. The goal here is to make students communicate effectively in diverse situations using these grammatical forms accordingly.

 It is expected at the end of this course that students should have mastered the word classes of English language and make use of them correctly in writing and speaking of English without any fear of error(s).


ENG 123 is the code for this course with the title:  Introduction to Modern African Literature and Female Writers. As the title shows, it introduces you to modern African literature and female writers. We will begin by considering what constitutes African Literature. Before then, we will define literature, after that, we will look at the broad field of African literature, and within this broad definition, we will differentiate between modern African literature and the traditional oral African literature.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you should be able to :

  1. Define what literature is, its scope and functions
  2. Explain in details, the trends in modern African literature
  3. Analyse some works of selected modern African writers in general and female writers in     particular  

These objectives are as important as the contents of this course. Therefore, you are strongly advised to read them very well before you work through the units. You are also expected to refer to them while studying to assess the level of progress you have made in your work.
