INTRODUCTION

This course introduces the students to accounting in general. It defines what accounting is and explains how it is different from book-keeping. It defines some users of accounting information and what they are interested in as well as the importance of book-keeping. It identifies some users of accounting information and what they are interested in. it goes on to discuss some of the rules and practices that guides in the preparation of accounting information. The student is also introduced to Subsidiary Books and the methods of keeping them. Subsequently, the student t is introduced to the Ledger and its classifications and in the process, the Cash Book, balancing of accounts and extraction of the Trial Balance.


COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the session, the student must be:

Distinguish between book-keeping and accounting

Identify the users of accounting information and what they are interested in

Identify and explain the various source documents

Familiar with the methods of keeping subsidiary books.

Prepare a cash book, post to various ledger accounts and extract a Trial Balance.
